The Rising Sun Inn
Registered on the National Register of Historic Places, Rising Sun Inn is an extraordinary survivor of farmhouses and taverns built in the 18th century. It is almost intact and gives a glimpse of an excellent example of pre-revolutionary construction and the family life of a tavern and pub colony. The first section of the inn was built in 1753 by Edward Baldwin, a planter in Anne Arundel County. The tavern and inn extension was built by Edward's son and War of Independence Patriot Henry Baldwin.
The Friends of the Rising Sun Inn, a non-profit organization, is committed to keeping this unique and historic building strong. The house itself, built in two sections, measures approximately 20 feet by 60 feet. In the early construction stages around 1753, a gable roof and a brick gable side were placed on the headbond. Colonial masonry is rare in the United States except for Maryland and rarely survives outside Annapolis and Chestertown. At this end of the house, an indoor fireplace also supplies the basement and the first and second floors.
